Ohio Youth & Government State Assembly

Ohio Youth & Government (YG) is a three-day experiential learning conference in which students participate directly in a simulation of the State’s democratic process.

Acting as Senators and Representatives, students write, debate, and vote on legislation that affects them. Officers elected by students serve as Governor, Speaker of the House, President of the Senate, and are appointed to other conference leadership positions. During the entire process, students are supported by YMCA professionals, teachers, advisors, alumni, parents, and volunteers. YG offers students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills, and articulate their beliefs while engaging constructively with those who hold like and opposing views.

Thank you to advisors Mrs. Hatfield and Mrs. Togliatti who accompanied sixth graders Adler Hatfield, Josh Laux, James Thompson, Colin Putt, Maggie Chamberlin, Kelly Wolboldt, Sydney Rizzo, and Ruthie Togliatti for the three-day conference held at the Statehouse from Sunday, November 18, through Tuesday, November 20.

The St. Peter’s students were part of Scarlet Senate House.  In the Statehouse chamber rooms, they listened to bills created by fellow Ohio middle school students in their committees. Then they congregated to pass or fail the remainder of bills in the Senate Chamber for four hours using official parliamentary procedures.

Go Spartans!
