Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, schools teach children about behavior, just as they would teach about other subjects like reading or math. The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Technical Assistance Center on PBIS supports schools, districts, and states to build systems capacity for implementing a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional and behavior support.
With the focus on positive behavior, results are improved academic performance and student communication, strong teacher-student relationships, increased instructional time, and reduced discipline referrals.
St. Peter’s Elementary School has implemented the PBIS program this school year and it’s off to a great start.
Signs designed by Tridico Silkscreening and Sign Company are displayed throughout the school building, reminding students of expectations. And the other good news is that students can use “rewards”, a plan recommended by PBIS. “Reward” tickets can be redeemed in the Spartan Store.
