Prayer Vigil in Remembrance of Lives Lost

Both the elementary school and the hs/jrhi held prayer services on Wednesday in remembrance of students and staff who lost their lives in the Florida school shooting one month ago.  The elementary school and staff gathered in the main hall at 10 a.m., had prayer and sang several songs.

The high school and junior high also held a prayer vigil.  This letter was written by Mr. Roy Shoulders, assistant principal and teacher at SPHS/JrHi and sent to parents prior to the Wednesday morning prayer vigil.

“On Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., our Junior High and High School community will be conducting a prayer vigil in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

This prayer vigil is taking place during the time that a number of school walkouts are being conducted nationally.

We are by no means associated with the walkout movement and we are not making political statements of any nature. Instead of putting focus on political issues, which the national walkout stresses, we are choosing to put the focus on where it should be…the 17 lives (14 students, 3 faculty) that perished during this horrific event. In other words, we are doing what we do best at St. Peter’s, during times of crisis and distress . . . PRAY!

A wonderful prayer service has been organized by myself and four senior young ladies, Meg Maxwell, Lucia Rice, Sydney Genter and Corinne Amalfitano. They should be applauded for the effort, time, compassion and empathy placed into making our prayer service something that I know will be a moving experience for all.
