Summer 2016 Autism Spectrum Disorder Puppetry Program

The Summer 2016 ASD Puppetry Program is designed specifically to benefit youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to learn fundamentals of puppetry, theatre and storytelling. Storytelling, socialization and pretend play are integral to child development – theatre and puppetry together are very positive and exciting modes of play. Students will learn to create strong characters, rich dialogue, and engaging story lines. They will work on the following skill areas: playing more cooperatively with others, more readily accepting others’ differences and mistakes, and becoming better able to take turns and be more flexible when needed.

Richland County youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ages 9 to 18, are invited to apply for this 5-week puppetry camp (Wednesday and Thursdays – total of 10 sessions). Thirty ASD youth and 10 neuro-typical youth will be accepted in each age bracket. This interaction promotes further socialization skills amongst all of the students. Participants will be screened prior to acceptance, and must commit to a 90% attendance rate to the program.

Zoot Theatre Company Artistic Director, Tristan Cupp, will guide students through the interactive program. Actual puppets will be constructed using an “underwater sea/ocean theme!” Several adults and assistant “play guides” will be available to work with the students.

The summer program will culminate in short performances utilizing the puppets designed and built by the students.   All programs will be held at The Renaissance.  There is no program cost to participate.
