About Us

Established 1868

St. Peter's School History

Since 1886, St. Peter’s School has been a beacon of excellence in Catholic education, nurturing faith, compassion, and purpose. Our coeducational, college-preparatory community offers rigorous academics, including honors, AP, and gifted and talented programming balanced with a curriculum that develops students of character, prepared to be of service to the world. We also encourage participation in athletics, arts, and other extracurricular activities, inspiring all students to explore new interests and strive for excellence.

In 1868, St. Peter’s School had its beginnings in a home behind the First St. Peter’s Church.  Starting in 1871, and lasting more than a century, the Sisters of St. Francis of Joliet staffed the school as faculty and principals.  They served the parish community until 2016. Since that time the school has grown in many ways, but one thing has stayed the same — our commitment to providing students with not only rigorous academics, but also a curriculum that develops students of character, prepared to be of service to the world.

As the population of Mansfield grew, so did the student body.  In its early years, the school educated students until the 8th grade.  In 1924, the school was expanded to include grades 9-12.  Then in 1976, the Montessori preschool started.

During our 150 year history, the school has occupied several buildings.  Our current elementary building opened in 1926 and the high school/junior high building opened in 1958.

Today, our student-body is diverse with small class sizes, which allow our faculty to provide personal attention to our students.

Our Mission

St. Peter’s School community strives to create an environment of academic excellence built upon Catholic spirituality and service. We seek to establish a challenging learning environment with high expectations while recognizing individual differences and learning styles. We are a community of St. Peter’s families, staff, and parishioners who are actively involved in our students’ learning. In keeping with this statement, the St. Peter’s School Community believes it…

will achieve academic excellence by:

  1. acquiring critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for lifelong learning
  2. cultivating learning experiences that support individual students’ strengths and needs
  3. encouraging each student to reach his full potential

will practice Christian spirituality by:

  1. understanding the doctrines of the Catholic Church
  2. modeling the teachings and evangelizing processes of Jesus through prayer, study, work, community service, and sacramental life
  3. nurturing personal faith through the study of Scripture and the reception of the Sacraments

will prepare to be of service to the world by:

  1. recognizing and utilizing the unique gifts given by God to each person
  2. practicing Christian values through philanthropic work
