St. Peter’s School – Myth vs Facts

Debunking the Myths

St. Peter's School

MYTH

St. Peter's is only for Catholic Students

FACT

St. Peter’s School welcomes students from all faith backgrounds.  Currently, more than 50% of students are from other faith backgrounds.  We believe every child is made in the likeness and image of God.

All students are required to take religion and theology classes, pray daily and participate in weekly Mass.  We ask that non-Catholics respect our faith traditions and participate to the best of their abilities.

MYTH

St. Peter's does not embrace diversity.

FACT

St. Peter’s School today has a student body that is rich and diverse.  Students at St. Peter’s come from many different socio-economic makeups.  Nearly 39% of our students are people of color, and every one of them is known, valued, and loved by our school community.

MYTH

Catholic school curriculum is not up to state standards.

FACT

Catholic School curriculum not only meets the standards set by the State of Ohio. We work hard to exceed them.  Over the last two years, we’ve increased our academic rigor and push our students to be their very best.

This past year, St. Peter’s was the only school in Richland County to require every student to take a CogAT Test.  This test helps to identify gifted and talented students.

Every Sophomore was also required to take a college-level study-skills course.  This College Credit Plus class through Ashland University was taught in-house by a Ph.D. faculty member.

As a small school, we can quickly move our resources to the areas of greatest need.  We also tailor our curriculum to challenge those who need more and support those who need additional help.

MYTH

My family can't afford the tuition.

FACT

More than 85% of students at St. Peter’s receive some form of financial aid.  Many families qualify for the Ohio EdChoice Scholarships, which covers 94% of tuition costs.

MYTH

I hear St. Peter's is closing...

FACT

Like Mark Twain once said, The reports of our death are greatly exaggerated.  Every few years, rumors about the school’s demise will surface.  In reality, we’re working hard to become the elite academic choice for families in Mansfield.

St. Peter’s School has been providing Catholic education for 155 years.  We’ve survived two World Wars, two pandemics, economic booms, and recessions.  Like our community, St. Peter’s School continues to evolve to meet the needs of our community.

MYTH

I can't provide transportation to school...

FACT

Ohio law has long required public school districts to provide transportation to students in grades K-8 who attend private schools. Students in grades 9-12 must be transported by their public school district if transportation is provided to students at the public school.

In general, transportation to St. Peter’s School is provided on a ‘same basis’ principle as long as St. Peter’s School is within a 30-minute drive by direct travel to the public school building that the child would be assigned to attend in public schools.

Upon enrollment to St. Peter’s School, the parent/guardian should contact the transportation department of the public school district in which they reside with a formal written request for transportation.

MYTH

My child wants to play football...

FACT

Yes, it’s a fact that St. Peter’s High School has never had a football program.  However, thanks to a law passed in 2012 in the Ohio Statehouse, students attending private schools can play for their public school district of record if the private school doesn’t offer the sport.

Over the past several years, we’ve had students play football for Mansfield, Galion, Lexington, and Madison.  The same goes for other sports like baseball, softball, and swimming.

However, as we continue to grow, our athletic offerings will also expand.  Students at St. Peter’s will usually participate in fall, winter, and spring sports.  Our student-athletes can and do earn varsity letters as freshmen.
