Ohio Statehouse Field Trip

Thank you to Mr. David Miller, teacher, for these photos and information.

On Friday, April 27, two of our elementary classes had an exciting and educational experience at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. As a connection to the social studies curriculum, Mr. Miller’s fourth grade students and Mrs. Priess’s 3rd/4th grade class visited the Statehouse to see our government in action. Students were led through the Statehouse Building, learning its history and what governmental actions occur there daily.

As a part of the tour, the students had the opportunity to visit the Senate Chamber. During that time, our local Senator and Senate President, Larry Obhof, took the time to speak with the students. He invited the students to sit in the Senator’s seats on the Senate floor – an experience they will never forget. He led them through the voting process, allowing each student to take on the role of “State Senator”.  After discussing the “bill”, each “Senator” was asked to place his/her vote. The “bill” asked the “Senators” to decide if there should be year-round school in Ohio. Needless to say, the “bill” was voted down by an overwhelming margin. After speaking with the students and answering their questions, Senator Obhof graciously posed for photos.

The students, parents, and staff would like to thank Senate President, Larry Obhof, for his time, kindness, and dedication. This was truly a remarkable trip, providing the students with memories that will last a lifetime.
